Frequently Asked Questions

The Tuscola Police Department, established in 1877, currently employs six full-time officers and six part-time officers.  All officers, including part time staff, have attended certification law enforcement courses at an Illinois Law Enforcement Training Board recognized academy.   Under the supervision and leadership of the Chief Craig Hastings and Sergeant Heath Thurston; Tuscola Police Department provides around the clock police protection to the citizens and visitors of our City.   The department serves the City of Tuscola, the county seat of Douglas County, IL, and a 2.75 square mile area around the city.  This area includes a residential population of just under 5,000, agricultural areas, a large industrial complex and retail establishments.  Our service area includes the Tuscola Outlet Center, which increases the population significantly during business hours.    Tuscola is located on a major traffic thoroughfare with the intersection of U.S. Highways 36 and 45, along with Interstate 57 traversing the area.

Tuscola Police Department utilizes both marked and unmarked squad cars and SUV vehicles, as well as patrol bicycles and golf carts for specialty assignments.  Within the ranks of the department are a Master Firearms Instructor, Taser Instructor, Physical Tactics Instructor, and a Certified Juvenile Officer.   Officers are equipped and trained in the use of state-of-the-art equipment including in-car video cameras, vehicle cages, mobile data terminals, patrol rifles, and less lethal TASERS and pepper-ball munitions.

Tuscola Police Department has a 911 reciprocity agreement with other area departments and is frequently called upon to handle or assist with emergency calls for service in Douglas County and other communities.  TPD is an annual participant in the Illinois State Police Roadside Safety Checkpoint program.

Tuscola PD continues to focus on its primary mission: providing professional service and protection to the citizens of and visitors to Tuscola. From bicycle patrols of the City parks to theft prevention classes for local businesses, Tuscola is proud of the excellent service and reputation of its police department.
